The anagen phase is the active growth stage of the hair follicle cycle, during which dermal papilla cells are mitotically active, the hair matrix produces new keratinised cells, and the hair shaft elongates at approximately 1 cm per month. This phase lasts 2-7 years on the scalp, with duration determining maximum hair length, followed by catagen (regression) and telogen (resting) phases.
