Repetitive DNA sequences (TTAGGG) at chromosome ends that protect genetic information during cell division, progressively shortening with age.
Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences (TTAGGG in vertebrates) and associated protein complexes at chromosome ends that protect genetic information from degradation and end-to-end fusion during cell division. With each replication, telomeres shorten by approximately 50-200 base pairs. When telomeres reach a critically short length (Hayflick limit), cells enter replicative senescence. Telomere length is considered a biomarker of cellular aging. The enzyme telomerase can partially counteract shortening, and its activity is influenced by oxidative stress, inflammation, and NAD+-dependent sirtuin activity. NAD+ supplementation research explores whether maintaining sirtuin function can support telomere maintenance.
