Glutathion (GSH) is een tripeptide thiol-verbinding aanwezig in vrijwel elke cel, die dient als het primaire antioxidante verdedigingssysteem van het lichaam en een kritische regelaar van de immuunfunctie. Dit protocol onderzoekt de rol van glutathion bij het handhaven van T-celfunctie en het moduleren van de cytokinenproductie.
Glutathion dient als centrale hub van het cellulaire antioxidante netwerk. Het neutraliseert direct reactieve zuurstofspecies (ROS), regenereert vitaminen C en E, en dient als substraat voor glutathionperoxidase en glutathion S-transferase enzymfamilies.
Glutathion is het meest abundante intracellulaire antioxidant, aanwezig in millimolaire concentraties in bijna elke cel. Het werkt via meerdere mechanismen: directe ROS-neutralisatie, regeneratie van vitaminen C en E, en als substraat voor detoxificatie-enzymen.
Uitgeput GSH belemmert T-celproliferatie, vermindert IL-2-productie, verlaagt NK-celcytotoxiciteit en compromitteert de oxidatieve burst van neutrofielen en macrofagen.
Oraal glutathion heeft beperkte biologische beschikbaarheid vanwege enzymatische afbraak in het GI-kanaal. Subcutane injectie omzeilt deze barrières en levert intact glutathion rechtstreeks aan de systemische circulatie.
